Eager for a quick getaway, I headed to California’s Central Coast in search of spots off the common tourist maps and found what I was seeking: an exciting but relaxing reminder that even our own “backyard” holds new surprises.

If you enjoyed my previous post on Pismo Beach or the 3-day Santa Maria getaway itinerary, you’ll find this revisit a perfect, fresh perspective on a familiar favorite. Let’s go!

Arriving after a few hours’ drive, I settled into the Homewood Suites by Hilton in Santa Maria on South Broadway, which served as a perfectly situated launchpad, offering spacious comfort that made my hotel stay feel like a temporary home.

Fresh Flavors at The Garden

A search for lunch landed me at The Garden Mediterranean Restaurant, located just a stone’s throw from the Santa Maria public library.

A favorite among the locals, The Garden offers a refreshing culinary departure from the region’s famous BBQ tri-tip and pinquito beans.

The falafel at The Garden is totally next level. Served golden-brown, incredibly light, and nearly grease-free, these chickpea-flour specialties were savory, crispy clouds that paired perfectly with hummus, a green salad, and smoky eggplant baba ganoush.

The atmosphere added to the delicious meal, which was devoured at one of many tables inside a relaxing, expansive covered patio with lush plants and fairy lights.

Poolside Relaxation and Rodeo Roots

After lunch at The Garden, I returned to the hotel to make the most of the beautiful Central Coast weather: sunny, blue skies around 75º F, sublime!

As the sun crossed the sky, I settled into a lounge chair by the pool and chatted with fellow travelers about the upcoming Elks Rodeo. A tradition for over 80 years, this legendary event is a massive community celebration, steeped in Santa Maria tradition.

Held over four consecutive days near the end of May, the Elks Rodeo features a parade, a rodeo queen contest, and professional ropin’ and ridin’ rodeo action that draws fans from all over the state.

Bold Bites at Cubanissimo

As evening approached, I headed out to Cubanissimo Cuban Coffee House and Café in nearby Orcutt, where I found an explosion of authentic flavors that had me channeling my inner Celia Cruz.

The lively atmosphere and expertly seasoned dishes provided a delicious, soulful counterpoint to California’s traditional fare. I sampled the black beans and rice, crisp tostones, sweet plantains, and a mango-infused green salad.

Every bite from Cubanissimo feels like a celebration of heritage, making it a standout dining experience for anyone craving bold, Latin American sabor.

The Allure of Los Alamos

The next day, a new phase of the trip began with a quick drive to Los Alamos, about 17 miles to the west of Santa Maria, a town so delightfully preserved it doesn’t even have a traffic light!

A tiny enclave with a vintage vibe, Los Alamos could teach a masterclass in Western charm. Here, the pace is slowed way down, and every storefront feels like a curated discovery: a perfect oasis amid the agricultural expanse of the Central Coast.

Decadence at Bob’s Well Bread Bakery

Baked goods lovers know the secret of Bob’s Well Bread Bakery as the undisputed warm heartbeat of Los Alamos. Visitors and locals flock here, so arrive early to snag a table on one of their spacious patios.

For my first meal of the day, I opted for a decadent latte and a beautifully composed bagel-and-lox board with all the fixings: red onion, tomato, tangy capers, and plenty of smoky fish.

While all their baked goods are glorious, the croissants are the real showstoppers, and the lush pistachio croissant that I selected was flaky, buttery, and worth every single calorie.

Bob’s has two locations, with the other in Ballard, California, near the Danish culture-themed town of Solvang.

Local Soul at Los Alamos Gallery

After breakfast, a walk through the small town of Los Alamos as it comes alive is a must. Pop into the Los Alamos Gallery, which showcases vibrant kiosks featuring the work of resident artists mixed with eclectic antiques.

On this cool-air morning, I watched artist Bobby Williams painting live on-site, making the space feel more like a living studio than a retail gallery.

Tempted by Tastings at Santa Maria Olive Co.

Tempted by a postcard I found on my table while lunching at The Garden, the Santa Maria Olive Company offers a free tasting experience that definitely feels like a well-kept secret.

Since 2003, this father-and-son team has worked tirelessly to become the region’s premier artisanal olive growers, and their passion among visitors is infectious.

After finding the location, guided by huge roadside signs, I enjoyed an educational presentation on the process of making olive oil, followed by a guided golf cart tour of the grounds.

I wrapped up my visit to the proud local company by purchasing a few bottles of their delicious “liquid gold,” which is also available through their website.

With their future goals of improving the land, enhancing the tasting experience, and diversifying their products, Santa Maria Olive Company provides a great way to spend an afternoon, immersed in agricultural education and local ambition.

Wood-Fired Magic at Ember

After a full day of intermittent exploring and relaxing, the evening took me to nearby Arroyo Grande for a spectacular dinner with local friends at Ember.

The restaurant, whose motto is “Wood Fired Honest Food,” was hopping with happy diners as the hostess led us to a cozy spot on the patio to enjoy the lively atmosphere.

Our excellent waiter steered us toward some incredible small plates: crispy potatoes and albacore, tangy fried green tomatoes, and a blue cheese-walnut pizza that was absolutely magnificent.

Finishing our meal with a pleasurable fullness, we unanimously agreed that Ember is a glowing example of the Central Coast’s culinary scene.

Sacred Spaces at St. Louis de Montfort

Wrapping up this visit on Mother’s Day, paying homage to the local churches felt all-in-all appropriate and on-point.

The area is home to several beautiful congregations, including the welcoming St. Louis de Montfort Parish in Orcutt, offering services in English and Spanish throughout the week.

Others might find peace at the historic St. Mary of the Assumption; for more on the architecture and community feel, revisit my post featuring an Orcutt deep-dive.

For those non-church goers who find sanctuary in nature, a morning hike through Preisker Park, located a short distance from Homewood Suites, provides the same sense of renewal.

California Dreamin’ Back to Reality

As I headed back north toward Sacramento, I felt a deep sense of gratitude for the gorgeous state we call home. Yes, the price at the gas pump is currently a nasty sting, but the ability to drive a few hours from the Capital City to find myself in a completely different world is a luxury well worth the cost.

There is so much to discover in the Golden State when you take the time to look past the major tourist traps, but even those have their virtues! It all depends on what you’re seeking.

Wrap Up: Chasing the Sun has Just Begun

Wrapping up my revved-up revisit to Santa Maria, I feel sure this was just the beginning of discovering more spectacular secrets. Looking ahead at my travel calendar, the possibilities are wide open for even more new adventures.
