Watsonville, CA: Visit to The Hangar, a Unique Community Hub

Everything happens for a reason, including the detour during a rainy scooter rally weekend that led me to the industrial charm of The Hangar in Watsonville, CA. Located about 18 miles from Santa Cruz, Watsonville was once known as “The Apple City” for its vast orchards and rich agricultural history.

While serendipity and detours are beyond our control, I believe that when plans change, it often leads you toward something you were meant to find. Here’s the discovery that made the detour worth it for me!

The Thrill of a Sudden Pivot

As torrential rain threatened the weekend forecast for the annual Black Sheep Scooter Club’s Morning Wood rally in Santa Cruz, I pivoted and amended my plans to ride, thus protecting my 1969 Lambretta and Vespa, and me, from any potential accidents on slippery roads.

Trading two wheels for four, I drove down on a Saturday morning from San Francisco. While waiting for the scooters to show up at the afternoon meeting point, I stumbled upon a pocket of cool revitalization nearby at The Hangar.

Rearranging and Reasoning

Arriving at the Santa Cruz Cider Company at 12:30 PM, I realized I had a sizable wait until the riders were due to roll in at 2:00 PM. My appetite was getting the best of me, so I looked around for a lunch spot and found The Hangar about a three-minute drive away.

Aviation Vibes & Industrial Gems

Located near the tiny, historic Watsonville Airport, The Hangar is a masterclass in modern repurposing: a secret tucked away from the main highway, where small prop planes meet an industrial-chic aesthetic.

Walking past the nearby vacant lots, I spotted what looked like a vintage electric boat-car in faded red and a custom black Pontiac LeMans: mechanic reminders that even the smallest towns may have roots in an eclectic, autonomous car culture.

Fueling Up: The Hangar Hits

Walking into the Hangar, past its ubiquitous yellow tarmac “RAMP” signs, I met a lovely couple, Kelly and Tom, who had stopped for a Watsonville lunch break on their way to the Monterey Bay Aquarium.

As Tom enjoyed a piece of Pineapple Express pizza from Slice Project, we all agreed that sometimes, the best travel stops are about surprises, like the place we’d just all found.

Tacos el Fuego

I’m a huge fan of seafood tostadas and was lured in by the chalkboard special for a Mango Shrimp Tostada at Tacos al Fuego, just inside the entrance to The Hangar. I paired the tostada with a traditional Baja Fish taco and a refreshing pepino-limón agua fresca.

A crispy corn tostada piled high with plump, grilled shrimp, avocado, and sweet diced mango went perfectly with a golden-fried fish taco resplendent with shredded cabbage, cilantro, and savory sauces.

The flavors were incredible, and the experience was enhanced by excellent service from Manny, whose kind and enthusiastic welcome made this local spot feel like a true destination.

Mr. Z’s Crêpes and Teas

If you’re looking for something lighter or with a sweet finish, the menu at Mr. Z’s Crêpes and Teas, next door to Tacos al Fuego, is enticing and varied. As a nearby diner enjoyed their Croque Monsieur with ham and cheese, I tucked into a sweet lemon crêpe with a matcha latte featuring black boba pearls.

A bright spot with yellow walls and catchy artwork, Mr. Z’s Crêpes and Teas, with a sister location in Aptos, is worth the visit when at The Hangar.

Walking along the storefronts of The Hangar, I encountered a massive, airy space with an incredible selection of libations and an impressive merch table. Stepping in curiously, I quickly concluded that Beer Mule is an important establishment at The Hangar.

Packed with families and friends enjoying light fare, soft drinks, canned craft brews, and growlers of draft, this “Kick Ass Beer” space seemed to be the perfect place to wait out a storm and people-watch.

Honeylux Coffee

Eager to meet my friends and admire their scooters, I ended my Hangar adventure at Honeylux Coffee with a luscious Golden Hour Latte: a specialty drink recommended by Jerry, a friendly barista who worked swiftly and smoothly, filling orders for a short line of happy customers.

While waiting for my aromatic drink, I perused the cozy cafe and found it to be the perfect, buzzing sanctuary from the looming grey clouds outside.

Rallying (NOT) in the Rain

A little after 2 p.m., I made my way to Santa Cruz Cider Company to meet up with the hosts and riders of the Black Sheep Scooter Club Morning Wood vintage rally.

As the two-stroke engines of antique Lambrettas and Vespas hummed into the lot, the storm had subsided, with only a few mud-splashed forks to show for the miles of grit and grey of the ride.

While attendance for the rally was smaller than in previous years, the spirit of the scooterists who braved the elements remained high.

As DJs spun tunes from 45″ records, riders, friends, and family noshed on quesabirria, tacos, and other delights from the Chubby Taco Food Truck parked nearby.

To commemorate the ride, the Santa Cruz Cider Co. produced a limited-run cider can featuring the Black Sheep Scooter Club Morning Wood vintage rally artwork, the perfect accompaniment to the fresh green 2026 event t-shirts.

The Long Way Home

Heading back to San Francisco in the early evening, the usual mountain passes of 17 and 35 were a mess of accidents and delays, so I opted for the beauty of coastal views along Highway 1.

The drive was moody and beautiful, winding along the coast as the rain poured down. Passing the Montara Lighthouse in the fading light was a perfect full-circle moment, reminding me of my epic road trip there to spend the night.
