Barrio Crespo: The Best Neighborhood in Cartagena, Colombia

Are you visiting Cartagena, Colombia soon and looking for a clean, quiet, safe place to stay? Barrio Crespo is the best neighborhood for visitors. As one of the most authentic areas in the city, it is perfect for anyone wanting a pleasant, relaxing place.

A triangular-shaped neighborhood offering a slice of local life, Barrio Crespo is about a 15-minute drive from the bustling tourist hub of the Centro.

With Aeropuerto Internacional Rafael Núñez conveniently located in its center, Crespo embraces Cartagena’s route to and from Barranquilla, along the scenic Anillo Vial, which leads past La Boquilla’s lush mangroves. Ready to learn more? Let’s visit Barrio Crespo!

Discover the Authentic Charm of Barrio Crespo

Barrio Crespo is bordered by a sizable beach and the wetlands of the coastal lagoon Ciénaga de la Virgen, with family-focused areas like Daniel Lemaitre and Canapote nearby. This “trifecta” makes it a charming barrio where true Cartageneros live and work.

While working as a Creative Writing and English Literature teacher in Cartagena de Indias, I enjoyed living in a studio apartment with a sizeable patio in Barrio Crespo. I remember walking on balmy evenings through the streets and appreciating the area’s laid-back vibe, friendly residents, local gems, and notable safety.

When I lived here, Crespo was less developed than it is now. Before I left in 2016, I saw the potential growth for the area. Where there once was only wild foliage, patchy dirt lots, and a single lifeguard stand, there’s now an expansive malecón, a delightful park, and a scenic beach: all the more reason to love Barrio Crespo!
