Welcome to Norcross: Meet the Mayor
Located 20 miles from downtown Atlanta, Norcross is a place with a walkable historic downtown, clean, tree-lined streets, and smiling, friendly people, all of which I encountered on a recent visit there.
One afternoon, I met the mayor, Craig L Newton, an articulate man with a redeemable vision for his city, and his associate, Mary, who helps run the website The Heart of Norcross, featuring The Historic Norcross Business Association.

As the afternoon sun beamed across a blue sky, Craig and Mary sat on the patio of The Iron Horse Tavern with some business-looking papers spread out on the table.

After I introduced myself as a travel writer and learned more about the historic district, Craig jokingly told me he believes so much in his city that Brandon Hembree, the mayor of nearby Sugar Hill, still owes him dinner for informally claiming which football team would win a rivalry; Norcross won, of course. Hembree’s dinner deal, as of this writing, remains at large…

Norcross: The Ideal Midpoint
During a one-week stay in Norcross, while visiting family and working remotely, I found the city to be an ideal midpoint between relatives near Sugar Hill and friends in Tucker, Decatur, and the metro Atlanta area.

With plenty of quiet spots to set up my laptop and a lively atmosphere, Norcross checked every box for balancing productivity with leisure. I enjoyed every minute, especially thanks to the incredibly warm and welcoming locals.
Norcross boasts some amazing stores and notable restaurants, and their public areas – including an expansive park, a modern public library, and an informative welcome center – make the place worth a visit, hands down. Here’s the best of what I found in Norcross.

With its modern open-concept design and comfortable seating, this public library became my work-week HQ. The reliable Wi-Fi, peaceful surroundings, and friendly staff made it a no-brainer for GTD – getting things done.
During my time in the library, a regular patron took customer service calls from his laptop, often answering loudly with, “Thank you for calling our customer service line…” It was both hilarious and slightly distracting, but honestly, it just added to the local color.
