Going Solo in Cozumel, Mexico: Beautiful Dives and Unique Vibes

An Insider’s Guide to a Low-Cost, High-Adventure Solo Dive Trip

As a seasoned traveler, the deep blue Caribbean sea has a way of calling me like an irresistible siren, which is why it’s no surprise that I found myself answering in my swimsuit and a sunhat.

As soon as I stepped off the bright yellow ferry onto Isla Cozumel, I knew I’d made the right choice to visit this Mexican treasure!

While this island hop was an extension of my time exploring the beauty of the Yucatán, including the colonial charm of Merida, Cozumel proved to be much more than a footnote in my itinerary.

Whether you want to explore the depths of the Mesoamerican Reef or simply soak up the festive island energy, Cozumel is a sanctuary for the independent spirit. Come on, let’s dive in!

Crossing the Turquoise Divide

Anyone who’s visited this area will probably agree that getting to Cozumel is half the fun. The ferry from nearby Playa del Carmen is a short, exhilarating ride across water so blue it looks like it’s been filtered by a dream!

Sitting on the top deck with the warm sun and sea breeze on your face is the ultimate transition into vacation mode. As the coastline of the mainland shrinks away, the rising silhouette of San Miguel de Cozumel comes into view, welcoming you to the island’s charming shore.

Despite being Mexico’s largest Caribbean island, the Centro area is incredibly easy to navigate on foot. I found that walking through the colorful streets was the best way to stumble upon the island’s hidden gems, far away from the standard cruise ship crowds.

Finding a Home at Blue Magic Hostel

I focused on Isla Cozumel after receiving my advanced PADI license in Cabo San Lucas, in Baja California Sur, a few years earlier. As a diver, your choice of accommodations sometimes sets the tone for the entire trip.

I wanted something simple, but I also wanted to be around like-minded divers and waterfolk. After being tempted by their “dive with us, stay for free” package, I settled on Blue Magic Hostel: exactly the “base camp” I needed for this trip.

In addition to its package offer, I chose Blue Magic because of its reputation among the diving community. There is an unspoken bond between people who spend their early morning hours 60 feet underwater, and the hostel’s atmosphere reflects that shared passion.

I found it to be laid-back, organized, and filled with people who value the ocean and all it has to offer.

While the hostel was bustling with groups and pairs sharing the larger dorms, I ended up with an entire dorm to myself.  Having a quiet, private space to decompress after a day in the salt and sun, while still having access to the social kitchen and communal areas, was the best of both worlds. I also enjoyed the sizable pool and cozy hammocks, which were equally refreshing and relaxing.

Getting the Best From My Advanced PADI Certificate

The main idea for this trip was to make the most of my Advanced PADI certification. I had earned my stripes during a previous trip to Cabo San Lucas in Baja, and I was itching to see how the Caribbean currents compared to the Pacific.

Cozumel is legendary for its “drift diving,” where the current gently carries you along the reef as if you’re on an underwater conveyor belt.

Gliding past towering coral formations beside sea turtles and eagle rays, while moving with the ocean, is a transformative experience. If my time in Baja prepared me for the technical side of diving, then Cozumel allowed me to enjoy the majesty of the reef. If you are a certified diver, the visibility and biodiversity here are world-class and ready to be experienced!

Artisan Finds and Island Culture

When I wasn’t underwater, I spent my time wandering the neighborhoods surrounding the town center. Cozumel has a thriving, unique, creative scene if you know where to look.

In the heart of the town, I also explored the Corredor de Artesanos at Plaza Benito Juárez. This area is perfect for a late lunch or a sunset stroll. In the evening, the plaza is often alive with music and families enjoying time together.

The “Soriana” Secret: A Quick Fix for a Travel Mishap

No travel story is complete without a little hiccup! During the Yucatán leg of my journey, I realized I had left my swimsuit drying on some rocks at a cenote after lunch. Being on a world-class diving island without a swimsuit is a bit of a crisis, but I didn’t panic.

Years ago, while living in Puerto Vallarta, I learned a valuable pro-tip: when you need a quick, affordable replacement for essentials, skip the boutique touristy shops and head to Soriana. A vast supermarket where locals shop, Soriana carries clothing as well as food and household items.

After a few tries, I found a great new swimsuit without paying an inflated price. I cherish these small reminders that, even when things go wrong, there’s always a solution if you trust your instincts and know where to look.

Sun, Sand, and Sea: Popular Beaches to Visit

While the main town of Isla Cozumel is walkable, you’ll want to head a bit further out to experience the best beaches. The island’s west side is known for its calm, crystal-clear waters, perfect for snorkeling right off the shore.

  • Playa Palancar: This is a classic beach for a reason. It’s further south, offering a more tranquil vibe with soft white sand and excellent beach clubs.
  • Playa Mia: A great spot if you’re looking for the sea with extra amenities and activities.
  • Punta Sur Eco Beach Park: If you have time for a taxi ride, this ecological reserve is breathtaking. It features a lighthouse, a nautical museum, and some of the island’s most pristine coastlines.

Authentic Flavors: Three Local Eateries Worth Trying

Cozumel has an incredible culinary scene that caters to every budget. For those looking for delicious, authentic, and affordable meals, these three spots are essential:

  1. Cervecería Punta Sur: While famous for their craft beer, this place also serves incredible wood-fired pizzas and empanadas. It’s a great spot to meet fellow travelers and enjoy a local brew.
  2. Guajira Art Café: A cozy, artistic spot perfect for a slow breakfast or a mid-afternoon coffee. As the name suggests, the vibe is very artsy: full of heart and creative energy.
  3. Los Otates: If you want authentic Mexican tacos and local specialties without the “tourist tax,” this is the place. It’s simple, bustling, and the flavors are spectacular.

Reflections on Solo Travel and Gratitude

As I sat on the ferry heading back to the mainland, watching the sunset dip below the horizon, I felt an immense sense of gratitude. Cozumel reminded me that solo travel isn’t about being alone; it’s about being present.

When you travel alone, you have the freedom to change your plans, the thrill of navigating a new street, and the joy of meeting strangers who share your love for adventure!

This island getaway was the perfect companion to my time in Mérida and an excellent stop on my Yucatan tour, which also included a day in Cancún and five days in the darling coastal village of Puerto Morelos.

Cozumel was a short stay, but the memories of the deep blue water, the kindness of the locals, and the relaxed vibe at Blue Magic Hostel will stay with me for a long time. On my final evening in Cozumel, viewing a cruise ship’s windows displaying the word “HOLA,” I mused that we are all connected, simply through our hellos!

If you’re looking for a place to recharge, dive deep, and rediscover your sense of wonder while not breaking the bank or resorting to a typical tourist itinerary, Isla Cozumel is waiting for you!
